Montreal is a hub of engagement in the digital sphere. From community groups and makerspaces to universities, think tanks and the private sector, the city is home to a rich network at the intersection of technology and society.
Artists, journalists, designers, activists, lawyers, technologists, researchers and political leaders all bring a unique perspective to this community—but sometimes we lack a way to bring them all together. TechPo’s mission is to promote collaboration, cross-pollination and skill-sharing, making it easier for those in Montreal to find each other.
Consider the following:
- A women’s studies researcher works with a security expert to study how digital surveillance targets women of colour.
- A startup partners with a community legal clinic to automate the process of filing refugee claims.
- A Bitcoin startup meets a nonprofit with concerns about the technology’s accessibility to those with visual impairments.
- A digital artist works with a privacy rights group to create a game that explores privacy concerns on social media.
Today, these different perspectives have few opportunities to intersect in Montreal — but they need each other.
As a start, we’ve made a list of the organizations working in this space, and of the meetups, events and mailing lists that people are already using to interact and share. Our next step is to distribute a survey in the community in order to find opportunities to bring people together and better share information.
Want to participate in the survey when it’s ready or get involved some other way? Send us a quick note!
